Storage Shed Kits – Is The Kit Really Worth It?

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Hey Frank Here,

If you are wondering whether or not you should buy a ready to go shed kit, I’m really glad you found my site and I suggest you keep reading…

Because this is my uncensored tale of clutter freedom. The good, the bad, the ugly, everything that was going wrong, and finally the one thing that turned it all around for me.

Living in a home for over 10 years I collected a lot of “stuff” (junk, even though I don’t like to call it that). From kids toys to exercise equipment that I used once plus all my landscape tools (and I am a perfectionist when it comes to my lawn) my garage over time became a war zone. Not only was it causing me frustration and agony every time I needed to get something to use, it was also quite embarrassing. Luckily most people don’t ask to see the garage.

I tried shelving units and organization but I still had too much stuff and not enough space. Talk about frustrations. Imagine its a Saturday afternoon mid August. The sun is blazing, you are hot and sweaty but determined to finish taking care of your property. You are looking forward to getting inside and cooling off or taking a dip in the pool, all you need to do is get the lawnmower, cut the grass, and you are done. But wait, it can’t be that simple can it? Oh no no no… You go into your garage and your lawnmower is underneath a bike, a bunch of those foamy things from the pool, and some clothes! And that’s when you (I rather) start throwing things in a fury of madness!

One day inspiration struck me like a bat. “Hey dummy, get an outdoor shed for all your lawn tools!” Now when I am looking to get something done, I figure out the best way to do it comparing price vs quality. I think its foolish to be cheap and buy things that won’t last but also foolish to spend a ton of money for cosmetics. What I needed was a shed big and strong enough to accommodate my needs, cheap enough to fit in my budget, and good looking enough to please my wife. Talk about a headache.

After researching what was available I decided the pre-built sheds and the do it yourself storage shed kits were out of range. I decided the best backyard shed would be the one I built myself and I soon discovered a site called My Shed Plans. At first glance this site looked too good to be true. It was everything I could ask for and more. I was a bit skeptical but decided to check out their free stuff which included a complete storage shed plan with the blueprints. I was very impressed with the quality and level of instruction provided although I didn’t particularly care for the shed. For under $50 I said, what they hey, and bought the product. It was by far the best investment I could have made. I found the perfect shed plans (and plans for all kinds of neat stuff) and wound up saving a ton of money buying the materials myself. Compared to a DIY kit for a shed approximately the same size, I built my own for about 50% of the cost. That included buying a couple of friends lunch for the two weekends it took to put it all together.

If you are like me and in dire need of some more space, you really need to check out My Shed Plans. Before you do this though make sure you really want to do this yourself. Perhaps a pre-built is right up your alley if you want to take the lazy route. If you enjoy the satisfaction that comes with doing and building things yourself, then I strongly recommend you take a look at My Shed Plans.

Storage Shed Kits – Do It Yourself Or Not?

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Having lived in my home for nearly 10 years, I have accumulated a lot of stuff! And I use the term ’stuff’ loosely to describe a bulk of things I own. The problem is that, all this stuff is the kind of stuff you can’t throw away. Do you know what I’m talking about? Most of us own a lot of stuff that we rarely ever use, or may never use again, but part of us just does not want to get rid of it! Well, all that stuff has made its way into my garage, and now my garage looks like it was hit by a bomb.

I decided it was time to get some extra storage space and felt that an outdoor shed would be perfect. I decided to check out what was out there and did a little research on shed kits. Mainly I was interested in wood storage shed kits but everywhere I looked I couldn’t find anything with the right size and right price. I was not spending thousands for a shed kit! No way Jose! And funny enough, in my searches I came across “rubbermaid storage sheds” and, well, they do not qualify to be called a shed at all…

I soon realized that this was one project that I was going to have to tackle on my own.  Now I am no master carpenter, but I have done some minor home repairs and improvements in my day =). I figured my best bet would be to find some backyard shed plans and build my own. And that’s just what I did. I saved a bunch of money and was quite proud of myself. Now I can actually walk through my garage and find what I need without screaming and throwing a fit. It is a wonderful relief.

Stay tuned for more information on how I did it and what I used.

Talk soon.
